GoldenEye 007 is a first person shooter developed by Rareware and edited by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was released on August 15, 1997 and is based upon the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye.

Description

The game features three modes:

The first mode is the single player story mode, where a player can play as James Bond and follow the game scenario, based off of the original film.

The second mode is the multiplayer mode. Here, a player can play with their friends (up to 4 people total) in different scenarios set forth in the menu, and have access to all the characters that are used in the single player mode (and even some who aren't, upon completion of the single player story mode).

The third mode is called "Cheat Options", which enables the Cheat Mode if any cheat is selected and prevents the earning of other cheats. Options which can change the game both visually and gameplay-wise may be adjusted. Some are useful, such as the invincible cheat, and some are for novelty, such as DK mode (which makes the characters have large heads and arms, similar to the Nintendo character, Donkey Kong, from which the DK mode cheat takes its name).

Select Mission Mode

Here, the player takes on the role of James Bond and plays through the game scenario. There are 18 levels and two bonus levels. When a level is selected, there are three difficulties:

Once one has finished all standard modes, 007 mode is unlocked. In 007 mode, the player may select the amount of health enemies will have, the amount of damage they can give, their accuracy and reaction times.

Multiplayer Mode

Multiplayer Mode allows players to play in various scenarios against other players as a team or against a single enemy.

Player vs. Player Scenario

Five scenarios may be chosen:

Each of the game types (except for normal and "team x vs. y") are named after Bond films.

  • Normal: Classic deathmatch.
  • You Only Live Twice: As the name suggests, players only have two lives. The last person alive wins.
  • The Living Daylights [Flag Tag]: One of the players must find a flag, and then pick it up, without being killed by the other player(s).
  • The Man with the Golden Gun: one of the two players must find the Golden Gun, and then pick up the gun, without being killed by the other player(s).
  • Licence to Kill: One hit kills the players.

-Team: 3 vs 1

Trivia

  • Suprisingly, the game's addictive and famous multiplayer was not intended to be in the final version of GoldenEye and was an afterthought.

  • The game was the 1998 AIAS game of the year.
  • Originally, the 4 save file slots, in addition to Brosnan were to be represented by previous Bond actors (with the exception of George Lazenby) Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton. However, because Rareware did not have the permission to use the likeness of any of the actors except for Brosnan, this was scrapped and all of the save files had Brosnan's picture in the final version.
